This January, Helen took that dedication one step further – volunteering as a pharmacist at the Australian Scout Jamboree in Maryborough, Queensland. Over 10 days, she provided medical support to over 10,000 scouts from around the world, embracing challenges, forging new connections, and expanding her professional skills in an entirely new environment.
New Town Pharmacist Helen Kruup volunteers at Australian Scout Jamboree
Whether she’s managing Slade Pharmacy New Town in Tasmania or leading eager young minds as a Cub Scout Leader, Helen Kruup is committed to serving her community with care and compassion.

A unique opportunity to give back
For Helen, the chance to volunteer at the Jamboree’s on-site medical centre was the perfect blend of her passions – pharmacy and scouting. She joined a team of healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and fellow pharmacists, to ensure attendees received the care they needed.
“When I heard about the opportunity to volunteer as a pharmacist at the Jamboree, I knew I had to be part of it,” Helen shared.
“With many from my Scout group attending, including my son, it was an incredible way to support them while also making a meaningful impact. Working alongside specialists, GPs, and nurses was a fantastic learning experience.”
Helen found the collaborative energy of the team inspiring, reinforcing the importance of teamwork in delivering exceptional care.
“I’ve gained so much from this experience, and I’ll definitely do it again. I encourage others to take on similar opportunities—you won’t regret it.”
Shared purpose, different setting
While the role of a Jamboree pharmacist differed from her daily work at Slade Pharmacy, Helen found a common thread: a commitment to exceptional care.
“Much like my work at Slade Pharmacy, our goal at the Jamboree was to provide outstanding care so attendees could have the best possible experience,” she said.
“Both settings require problem-solving, adaptability, and teamwork. The Jamboree, with its temporary medical setup and limited resources, reinforced how crucial communication and collaboration are in healthcare.”

Experiences to remember
Beyond her work in the medical centre, Helen embraced the unique experiences that the Jamboree had to offer. From trying hatchet archery—where she impressively hit a bullseye—to witnessing an unforgettable opening ceremony featuring fireworks and performances by artists like Amy Shark, the event was filled with memorable moments.
But for Helen, the most rewarding part was seeing thousands of young people step out of their comfort zones, develop new skills, and grow in confidence.
“Watching them tackle challenges, learn, and gain independence was truly inspiring,” she shared.
At Slade Pharmacy, we’re incredibly proud of Helen’s dedication—not just to her profession, but to making a difference in the lives of others. Her experience at the Jamboree is a testament to the impact pharmacists can have, both inside and outside the pharmacy.
An impactful career
With over 23 years in pharmacy, Helen has worked across hospital pharmacy, oncology pharmacy, immunisation, and now community pharmacy.
As our Pharmacy Manager at Slade Pharmacy New Town in Tasmania, she oversees pharmaceutical and compounding services for six local nursing homes and the wider New Town community.
What drives Helen is the endless potential to make a difference.
“Every challenge, like the Jamboree, brings new opportunities to learn, grow, and make a difference, and this is what keeps me passionate every day.”
