Shaping the future of pharmacy: Meet Murdoch Director of Pharmacy, Richard Grainger
Meet our Murdoch Director of Pharmacy, Richard Grainger
A pharmacy journey sparked early
Richard’s story began at just 14, sweeping pharmacy floors and stacking shelves. Even then, he felt a strong pull to the profession. After a brief foray into sales, he found his way back to pharmacy – completing his Bachelor of Pharmacy and never looking back.
“During my sales days, I had to take two buses, two trains, and walk a kilometre just to sell beds,” Richard shared.
“One cold, rainy day, I was soaked and thought – wow, I really need to do something different.”

Building a career with Slade
Richard started his journey with Slade as an intern at Murdoch (then APHS Murdoch), quickly moving on to become the site’s first junior oncology pharmacist, where he played a key role in building Murdoch’s oncology pharmacy services.
“It was a big learning curve. Oncology was new to Murdoch, and we had to collaborate with other hospitals to get the unit off the ground. Those early experiences were pivotal – they shaped the way I work today.”
Richard went on to become an oncology pharmacist, then Oncology Team Lead at Hollywood (now Slade Pharmacy Hollywood). In 2020, he returned to Murdoch to lead the site as Director of Pharmacy.
Throughout his career, Richard credits key mentors across Slade – John Forster, Andrew Wells, Russell Hill, and Cherrie Leong – with shaping his leadership style.
“I’ve learned so much from these leaders – skills and values that shape the leader I am today.”
Driving innovation for better patient careDriving innovation for better patient care
Richard is passionate about improving patient outcomes through smarter, safer systems. Under his leadership, Slade Pharmacy Murdoch and Richmond implemented a fully digital ordering process.
“It transformed the way we work – streamlining workflows, reducing interruptions, enhancing safety, and ultimately delivering a better experience for our patients,” he shared.
Committed to mentoring future pharmacists
Beyond operations, Richard plays an active role in growing the pharmacy profession. He serves as WA Chair of Advanced Pharmacy Australia, contributes to steering committees at the University of Western Australia and Curtin University, and regularly guest lectures.
“I find real joy in mentoring students and interns. Watching them grow and succeed is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job.”

Lessons in leadershipLessons in leadership
For Richard, leadership is built on authenticity, reflection, and building a strong team around you.
“No one’s a leadership master – we’re all students. Be reliable and open. Reflect, but don’t dwell. And don’t wait for a title – lead by how you show up every day.”
Recently recognised as a 2024 On-Purpose Iconic Award winner, Richard continues to inspire with his unwavering commitment to people, innovation, and the future of pharmacy.
As we celebrate 60 years of Slade Pharmacy, we’re proud to highlight dedicated leaders like Richard who help shape our journey every day.
