MEDICATION ADVICE WHILE PREGNANT AND BREASTFEEDING
Prescription drugs, recreational drugs, over-the-counter remedies or herbal remedies can affect you and your baby. They can make you produce more or less milk than normal.
If you have a condition that means you take prescription drugs it is important to speak to your GP or Slade Pharmacist.
Note: You should not stop taking prescribed drugs without advice from your GP.
KEEPING FIT AND BUILDING STRENGTH
For you and your baby exercise during pregnancy is important. It can improve posture; decrease discomforts such as backaches, constipation, bloating, swelling, fatigue and improving your ability to cope with labour.
Exercise is known to also have a positive effect on mood, sleep, depression, anxiety and stress.
EAT WELL FOR TWO
A balanced, healthy diet is crucial for you and baby during pregnancy and post birth.
For a balanced diet all vitamins and minerals are important. It is essential to make sure you are getting enough iron and vitamins A, C and D as your body needs to build up iron throughout pregnancy.
Most pregnant women experience swelling, aches and pains in their legs, ankles and feet. While you can elevate your legs and apply ice, maternity compression therapy is a safe and effective option. Maternity compression garments are made with soft and stretchy belly panels that grow with the pregnancy.
RECOVERY COMPRESSION GARMENTS
Research has shown that providing support to a wound such as a caesarean section or a swollen area reduces swelling and pain therefore aiding healing. Recovery shorts and leggings provide you with greater core stability and upper and lower abdominal support.
MAINTAINING GOOD BREAST HEALTH
Breastfeeding a baby (if physically possible), is the recommended way of feeding. Nipple compresses are available to prevent and soothe discomfort before and during breastfeeding. Compresses create moist healing conditions, prevent infection and condition the nipple area and provide direct relief for discomfort that may be experienced while breastfeeding (such as pain, swelling and sensitivity).
BREASTFEEDING ON THE GO
If you need to be away from your baby, expressing milk means that your baby can continue receiving the benefits of breast milk while someone else is caring for them.
Through our partnership with mybreastpump.com.au you can hire a Medela Symphony breast pump, the one hospitals regularly use and recommend, and pick-it up from your local Slade Pharmacy.
CHOOSING A BABY BOTTLE
Bottle feeding allows mum time away for a much-needed break and gives others the opportunity to bond with baby.
Finding the right bottle is important. Bottles come in a variety of shapes and nipple types, some have wide neck openings that make milk transfer and cleaning easy, others narrow openings that are harder to clean and can lead to spillage when filling. A Slade Pharmacy team member can assist you to make an informed choice.
ECZEMA IN BABIES
Eczema is a dry, itchy skin condition that affects up to one in five children and can be extremely distressing in babies as they find it very difficult not to scratch, which can lead to infections and disturbing baby’s sleep.
Moisturising your baby’s skin to prevent flare-ups is crucial. Speak to a Slade Pharmacy team member about the different treatments available.
