Flavouring and dosage forms – increasing product acceptability for the most fussy of patients
Flavouring animal medication
Smell, texture and flavour are important aspects to the acceptance of medicine. As well as catering to the preference of your patient, flavouring can help cover up any bitterness, balance salty or sour tastes and hide the aftertaste left by some medications.
The pH and many other physiochemical properties of a medication may limit the choice of flavour for a particular drug. Please ask one of our pharmacists to assist you in making the best choice.
Our compounding pharmacists will be able to assist in selecting the most suitable flavour to add to compounded medications based on the type of animal. We have a wide variety of flavours ranging from the popular chicken and beef flavours all the way through to exotic Pina colada. All together we have over 30 flavours available – just ask us for your favourite. Call one of our pharmacists at Slade Pharmacy Compoundia on 03 8602 3500 to discuss further.
Dosage forms for animal medication
Medications can be compounded in a number of different dosage forms to enhance their efficacy or to make them easier to administer. Over the years we have perfected a wide variety of dosage forms to cater for a range of patient needs including fussy animals, pet-owners with disabilities as well as to aid in the dosing and acceptability of highly unpalatable medications. We can also combine a number of medications in the one dose to assist in compliance and reducing the total number of dosings.
Popular dosage forms include:
- Oral pastes
- Gels and creams
- Eye and ear drops
- Bio-adhesive gels
- Medicated towlettes
- Transdermal preparations
- Topical preparations
If you have any concerns about dosing a very fussy pet, please speak to one of our compounding pharmacists who will be able to assist in selecting the most appropriate dosage form.
